Entrances
Summary
Building entrances now appear on Google Maps at mid and deep zoom levels upon selection of a place, and on navigation surfaces during arrival. This helps users more accurately identify where to enter a place, reducing last-mile confusion and improving the overall navigation experience.

Role
Lead UX Designer (Google FTE)
Contribution
As the lead and sole UX designer on this initiative, I partnered with a visual designer and UX researcher to define how entrances should appear on the map in a way that adds user value without contributing to visual clutter. Because this was a net-new map component, we had to design not just for one surface but for a system: a reusable entrance component that could scale across multiple product areas and user journeys.
I initiated and led cross-org collaboration with teams responsible for transit station and national park entrances to gather use cases and constraints. These partnerships helped ensure the design component would serve a broad range of environments — from dense urban stations to remote park trails — and remain consistent within the overall Maps design system.
In addition to the shipped version, I led the UX work for interactive entrances, exploring how entrances could become tappable elements that provide users with contextual information. This second version completed full UX exploration and received launch approval, but was ultimately deprioritized.
Impact
The building entrances component drove measurable improvements in map engagement, including:
+0.XX% increase in place clicks
+0.XX% increase in map interactions for a single search
+0.XX% increase in deep zoom visits
Post-launch surveys also reflected strong user sentiment, with users reporting clearer entry points to destinations and smoother last-mile experiences.
